Friday Discussion Session:

1/13/17 Kick-off Meeting:

Agenda:

  • Quick intros - Attendees:  Mike Conway, Kyle Chard, Ray Plante, Sharief Youssef, Gretchen Greene, Jim Myers
  • Review/Q&A regarding scope, with a report on any feedback from the TAC discussion of the pilot the day before
    • We're off and running with group members able to get wiki accounts to contribute material and/or NDS Labs accounts as we get to sharing code/services/data
    • TAC thought we've done a good job - it's a good idea and we've set a good example for other pilots
    • w.r.t. RDA - we're aware of potential synergies/overlaps, PIT and RDRI WGs are most directly relevant
    • general agreement on scope and focus on the 4 tasks outlined in the proposal
    • from the discussion - one issue for our pilot is to think about how data-based work differs from doc-centric work where identifierr schemes and protocols originated
  • Discussion of how we should operate going forward
    • always have agendas, lead with defining the next agenda, focus on technical topics for the meetings, not just status
    • plan on a monthly meeting, which could summarize work done by smaller groups assuming we're active, or allow us to have technical discussions as needed
  • Initial actions
    • General consensus that call participants can take the action to provide background info on what they are using today (protocols as well as schema) and look through to update other background/discussion items on the wiki
    • Also agree to 'shoulder tap' our friends - e.g. Dataone, Dataverse, others DIBBS for their info as well
    • We have the opportunity to alert NDS membership to our pilot through the mailer and to summarize it for the NDS leadership - Jim will craft and email and summary/ppt for this
    • We had some discussion of the practical aspects of task 1 including cool URIs, JSON-LD, RDA PIT group, etc. - we will set up a call(s) over the next 1-2 weeks with those interested and available to move the discussion forward
    • We agreed to a monthly meeting and will take the action to find a good time for it.
    • Assuming more background info on projects come in, we should be able to take the action to summarize at the next monthly meeting re: are there defacto options emerging based on current practices both w.r.t. to access protocol and schemas?
  • Use of email and wiki
    • wiki is open to any/all group members to add materials, may switch to having one editor and group comments as we get sections where we want a consensus view
    • email list will also be open for discussions, we'll look to split to announce and discuss if/when/as traffic increases
  • Periodic meeting schedule
    • whole group monthly meeting with ad-hoc work, subgroups meeting, etc. as useful
